What an experience!

Attending a weeklong workshop with Shar, with her level of knowledge in the world of glass was astounding.

I am a Leadlight artist of 13 years, I thought I had a fair knowledge of glass.  I have now now been plunged into a whole new world where the glass is felt, not just worked with but really understood.

It was an honour and a pleasure Shar, I look forward to attending my next class.  I can’t wait!

I am a Sculpture teacher from Manchester UK visiting Australia for a few months and was delighted to be able to fulfil an ambition of mine to learn a little about glass so that I can incorporate pieces of glass into my sculpture. I have just attended a week long course run by Shar in her light spacious and very well equipped studio learning about glass-fusing, pattern bars, slumping, draping, mould making, painting and more, firing kilns and running a studio. As a complete beginner, one of a small number of students, I have really appreciated her ability to explain what is happening, involve us in the process and allow us to be creative in our own way. Shar is very experienced and the depth of her knowledge is astonishing. It is very rewarding to work with an artist/artisan who is so inspiring. There is so much to learn yet but I feel I can go away and get started making things, as Shar says “allow the concept/design to dictate the method, not the other way around”, this is surely a recipe for adventure with glass. The workshop brilliant! It enables me to fast tract years of knowledge opposed to trial/error plus a lot of wasted time and money. Her sensitivity to glass and its environment along with the inter-relationship between kilns and glass are astounding. What an amazing five days! I was a complete beginner on day one, but we began interacting with the glass and learning cutting techniques within the first 30 minutes of the course starting. We never looked back, learning technique after technique, by actually doing it ourselves.
Shar is a patient and incredibly knowledgeable teacher, and lets individual creativity shine through. Learning in a working glass studio was another bonus, as was staying on site and having access to kilns and glass after classes finished for the day. This is a course that caters for those with experience and those like me, who just have a passion for glass and have only now acted on it. I’m still a beginner – there is so much to learn – but I had a wonderful time and feel confident enough to start searching for a kiln and enter the exhilarating world of working with glass. I have a lot of small pieces to take home with me to Adelaide. I am amazed that I created them. Thanks Shar for sharing so much of your knowledge in such a beautiful way.
