I must say I was so moved by Robert’s Sculpture.
CINDY POOLE
‘Strength & Fragility’- Mid Career Mentorship Project-Cindy Poole & Shar Feil-Moorman
I decided to focus on Breast Cancer as I could see the potential to use my artwork to raise awareness of this issue which affects so many women and their families. The mentorship gave me a rare opportunity to create artworks without the commercial intent and constraints that governed my daily practice. It was the chance to contribute at a community level and gave me a focus in which I could manifest my thoughts and skills into a tangible visual form.
- What did you achieve in terms of skills development outcomes?
The experience gained from working with Shar enabled me to fulfil my goal of creating a body of work where each artwork incorporated a different technique which appropriately reflected my intent. The skills required gave me both technical options and the ability to achieve a more professional finish that was previously limited.
A more in-depth understanding of the technical nature of glass and a greater confidence in the use of machinery has allowed me to take on new challenges and attempt new works in an independent setting. My skill base can now be used to bring my concepts into tangible forms.
Shar was able to mentor me in a way that allowed me to keep my own artistic direction and to maintain ownership of my work, whilst ensuring that the pieces had technical and conceptual integrity. Shar helped me to be aware of what it was that I was trying to say and to develop my understandings to a level that ensured that ‘my voice’ was represented in the appropriate technique/form. The importance that Shar placed on technical integrity was always the main governing factor that gave boundaries to the works. Many tests and experiments were completed to gain understandings of the new materials and techniques that we both explored. We then used Shar’s extensive knowledge base to develop my ideas and skills into the pieces that are part of this body of work. I feel extremely grateful for having this mentorship opportunity and cannot thank Shar enough for her generosity of time, knowledge and willingness to give so much of herself and her practice to me…
Throughout the year, in addition to the ‘Strength & Fragility’ pieces I also completed a number of exhibition and production pieces which has resulted in a more diverse general body of work.
- Were the original objectives achieved?
All of my objectives in the areas of networking, artistic skill & conceptual development, partnerships and the examination of women’s health and well being at a community level were achieved.
The greatest achievement was the development of a strong mentee mentor relationship. This involved three face to face residencies where Shar & I could exchange ideas and physically work together towards my goals. It also enabled secondary benefits of many hours of informal time together, mutual networking and examination of wider issues within the glass arts industry. In addition we were able to produce a greater depth and variety of technical work than at first envisioned. Travelling to Perth, Kalgoorlie and being onsite, immersed into my commercial practice gave Shar an additional insight into regional challenges and my everyday studio practice and it’s relevance to the wider market.
